Winter Steelhead, Spring Chinook and Westport Salmon

Howie's 17# Hen

TJ’s 24# Buck

Very good week for steelhead fishing once the rivers dropped back into shape.  Lots of action on the Olympic Peninsula and it is just starting.  Shaping up to be an excellent return of wild fish and well worth the trip out here to catch them.  Had several large fish in the high teens and two well over 20 pounds.  Howie from Shelton mastered the large fish this weekend with 5 fish ranging from 14 to 25 pounds.  Quite a feat.  He almost had to call in relief on the last one yesterday as his arm strated aching.

Then there was TJ the fishing machine.  Hundreds of steelhead have fell to this guy but this was his first big one on these majestic rivers.  A beautiful 24 pound buck on a cold crisp day was the ticket for him.  We talked him to buying everyone dinner.  Thanks for your generosity TJ.  It is appreciated!

Spring Chinook fishing is just around the corner and all indications are it will be a great season.  Right now the lower Columbia season is March 1 through April 6. We are hoping that there will be enough quota for an extension into mid April when fishing is best.

Please don’t forget our summer salmon season. After an awsome king season last year I think it is going to be as good or better.  I am already filling up for the season so don’t wait around to book a trip.

Olympic Peninsula Fishing “Reel Winterlike”

January 17th, 2012

Bill Boehm

Winter Steelhead Fishing is going great on the Olympic Peninsula.  Very cold conditions out there but have created some breathtaking scenery.   Looking forward to some warmer weather.

Don’t forget La Push for bottomfish and Umatilla kings is just around the corner!  Also can’t wait for Westport.  Kings fishing should be awsome again this year.

Great Fishing on the Olympic Peninsula this Week

December 25th, 2011

December Winter Steelhead

It has been a great two weeks on the Olympic Peninsula for hatchery winter steelhead.  Lots of fish to be had and lots of happy customers.  I hope this is a sign for numbers of wild fish returning in the next 3 months.  It certainly looks like a great return ratio for hatchery fish.

Looks like we will finally be getting some rain this week so it will be interesting to see what happens with all the rivers that are low and clear.  I bet there is a great push of fish.

Peyton Goos having a great day on the river

Peyton Goos of Shelton put the hurt on several hatchery fish like the one pictured and rounded out his day with a beatuiful native that he released into the river unharmed.  He said it was a great day because he outfished his dad!

Check out all the pictures in our weekly pictures gallery.

Winter Run Steelhead

December 8th, 2011

Bogy Limit

Winter Steelhead fishing is picking up on our coastal rivers.  Here is a nice limit taken on the Bogy last week by Ty Davidson and TJ Goos from the big town of Shelton.

Wild fish should start to move in towards the end of the month.  I believe we are going to have a great season.

Our photo galleries are just about up to date again as we have been on a reprieve from football season and have had time to unload pictures from cameras and load pictures into these galleries.

Looking forward to another great ocean season for bottomfish, halibut, salmon and tuna.

Winter Steelhead on the Olympic Peninsula – Bogachield – Hoh – Sol Duc

Winter Run Steehead

Sorry for the delays in reporting since ocean salmon season.  We were extraordinarily busy with our children’s sports.  Ryan, our 8 year old, just finished his first tackle football season for Tumwater.  As a starting linebacker he was a captain and the team went undefeated and won the Thurston County Youth Football League Championship.

Anyway we are back at it and all indications are that we will have a great hatchery winter steelhead season on the Bogachield, Hoh, Sol Duc and Wynoochee Rivers.  Our wild runs should also be great but it will be hard to beat last year.  Last weekend there was a good showing of winter runs on the Bogy so after all this water we should be in for some good fishing for several days.  Extended weather forecast looks good.

Don’t forget to book early for April, May and June Ling Cod and Halibut trips out of LaPush.  I hate to say this at the beggining of winter steelhead season, but I cannot wait for 2012 summer salmon season!  Based on the number of 2 and 3 year old Chinook in the ocean last summer and the extraordinary amount of Chinook jacks returning this year we should have another great summer for Chinook.  La Nina conditions usually create great conditions for our juvenile salmon and the food chain.  Hope our Coho can begin to rebound, it would be nice to have a great Coho return and a great Chinook return all in the same summer!  I will keep everyone posted on projections as I get them.  Give us a call.

Curtis Faile and his largest King ever

Westport salmon fishing is off the charts right now!  I don’t remember ever seeing this number of large kings in the area.  Limits are very easy.  This nice 30# plus king came last Saturday morning.  Curtis Faile and his crew had 10 kings in the boat from 23 to 32 pounds by 9:00 am.  Extraordinary non-stop fishing to say the least.  We are also seeing large numbers of hatchery coho up to 15 pounds.  Salmon season seems like it just arrived but it is nearly over.  We hope our opportunity lasts into September when the large Grays Harbor kings and Silvers near the harbor entrance for one last chance to feed.  Get out here and experience something that onl comes along every few years!

Give us a call, we have a few days left.  If we can’t fit you in remeber these fish will soon be in the rivers for some fantastic fishing from September through November.

Westport Salmon Fishing in Full Swing!

July 30th, 2011

Brian Fleutch with a nice morning king

Westport King salmon season is in full swing.  We have been limiting on Kings every day and we are also seeing a lot of nice Silvers and even Pinks.  Starting August 1 Westport is open seven days  a week and there are discussions being held that would increase the King limit to 2 kings per day.  This would be great as we enter the peak of the King migration in the first 2 weeks of August.  There are a lot of nice fish to be had.

Brian Fluetch of Olympia shows off one of many nice Chinook caught this week.  These are all great quality fish.

Thanks to Brian for organizing some great groups to fish with.

Kim Dinsmore with his money fish 30# plus

This large one came for Kim Dinsmore of Olympia.  It was the largest fish of the week weighing in the low 30′s.  It took a whole herring behind a diver 20 feet behind the boat early in the morning.  We had several others in the mid 20′s and lots in the high teens.   Check out the weekly pictures in our gallery for a look at the fish that are to be had off our coast this year.

We will have a few more open days starting this week because of the 7-day a week season.  Don’t wait around the peak of the run is here!

Greg Kluh with a large Umatilla Chinook

Washington’s coastal salmon season is heating up!  Westport and the North Coast off Umatilla have good numbers of King’s showing now.  We have been traveling between Westport and the North Coast to keep on top of the fish.  Last week we had beautiful weather and a flat calm ocean!  Fishing was great for King’s off Umatilla.  Easy limits and a few fish into the mid 20′s – finally some bigger fish.  These nice ones landed by Greg Kluh and Dave Wands of Olympia were caught off Umatilla.   We ended our day on a double header and had to gamble on which ones to keep. We guessed right, and kept the bigger fish.   Thanks Greg for all your skills in the boat!

It’s that time for the salmon season to break loose and in the last two days that has been the case at Westport.  The bait is south of the harbor near Willipa and its absolutely gangbusters for those who can make the run!  I will be running out of Ilwaco this weekend travelling up to just short of the line and then back to Westport for Sunday.

The Tuna are also beginning to show out about 40 miles.  Get ready as we will be on them here shortly.  Check out the June/July edition of Salmon Trout and Steelheader for our article on our fishing adventures.

La Push Halibut and Ling Cod Fishing

May 23rd, 2011

Vicki Purdue with large La Push Ling Cod

Halibut and Ling Cod fishing has been excellent out of La Push. This week the boat limited on Halibut, Ling Cod and Rock Fish each day.  Saturday the 21st was spectacular as we had 6 halibut and 12 large Ling Cod on the deck at 8:30 am in the morning.  Added a limit of 60 rock fish to the total on the way in.  Quite a haul for one day – over 500 pounds of fish on board.  Very happy customers.  Looks like we are going to get a few more days to fish so don’t be shy get up here and experience this great fishery.

Westport salmon season is just around the corner.  Get out here and go fishing with us.

2011 Ocean Salmon and Halibut Season

April 14th, 2011
Westport King

Westport King

Our ocean salmon seasons have been announced and they look good.  Starting June 18 we will start fishing out of Westport for hatchery chinook.

On June 26 the ocean opens up for both chinook and coho.  Westport will only be open Sunday through Thursday and Ilwaco, La Push and Neah Bay will be open seven days a week.  We are expecting a good portion of the king run to be 4 and 5 year old fish – BIG!.

I will be fishing Westport most of the time but will be offering trips all along the coast.  If you are interested in a specific area give us a call.  We customize our trips.

Our halibut season at La Push will be on May 12, 14, 19, 21 and June 2 and 4.  We have space available on June 2 and 4.  We also have a few ling cod days left before the deepwater fishery closes on May 21.  Looks like a great summer ahead.  Make those plans ahead of time toensure you get that king of a lifetime!

Don’t forget our Tuna also.
